NY lawmakers reach agreement on rent protections

ALBANY, N.Y. — Leaders in Albany have apparently struck a deal on rent protections for millions of New York City apartment dwellers.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins released a statement Tuesday saying an agreement on rent protections had been reached. She says they’re still finalizing the legislation and “will be issuing a joint statement with additional details when it is complete.”

The state law governing rent control and rent stabilization rules protecting tenants in older, multi-unit apartment buildings in and around New York City is set to expire Saturday.

The rules control how much a landlord may raise the rent and also restrict evictions.

There’s little doubt the rent law will be extended, but many Democrats also want to strengthen the rules and, potentially, extend some rental protections statewide.
